The Corn Laws allowed the British government to restrict the import of corn. In the late 18th century, there was an increase in the population of Britain. This population growth increased the demand for food grains. The demand for agricultural products and food grains increased when urban centres and industry expanded. As a result, the prices of food grains also increased. Under this stress, the government fixed high tariff rates on the import of corn and other products, commonly known as the Corn Laws. Because of the increase in food prices, industrialists and people in the cities protested against the Corn Laws.
