Metamorphosis is a process of developmental change during which certain animals undergo distinct and
dramatic transformations in their body form as they progress from one life stage to another.
Metamorphosis enables the vulnerable larval stages to avoid direct competition with adults. It can facilitate resource partitioning, and allow the animal to exploit different ecological niches.
Development is direct in earthworms and leeches. Their juveniles resemble adults. There is no metamorphosis of larva into adults.
