Oogenesis begins before birth. A mature egg forms only if a secondary oocyte is fertilised by a sperm. Oogenesis begins long before birth when an oogonium with the diploid number of chromosomes undergoes mitosis to form primary oocytes. The primary oocytes then start meiosis I but is complete only at puberty. So, only primary oocytes are produced only during the embryonic life and no more are added after birth.
