Detailed Solution

The major social groups of Sri Lanka are the Sinhalas and Tamils.
The Sinhalese comprise roughly 74 per cent of the population and are concentrated in Sri Lanka's densely populated southwest and central regions. The other major social group in Sri Lanka is the Tamils, who inhabit the north and east of the country. Tamil speakers account for 18 per cent of Sri Lanka's population. Tamil speakers are further separated into two groups- Tamils from Sri Lanka (the country's original Tamils) and Tamils from India (those Tamils whose ancestors came from India as plantation workers during the colonial period).
