The national food for work program and Antyodaya Anna Yojana are the schemes launched by the government to ensure food security in India.

National food-for-work programme: On November 14, 2004, a national food-for-work programme was introduced in 150 of the nation's most underdeveloped districts to accelerate the creation of supplemental wage jobs. All poor rural people who require paid employment and want to perform manual, unskilled labour are eligible for the programme. The food grains are given to the states for free as part of this 100% nationally subsidized programme.

Antyodaya Anna Yojana: AAY first went online in December of 2000. One crore of the BPL families receiving targeted public assistance as part of this programme was the lowest. The individual state rural development ministries identified low-income families through a Below Poverty Line (BPL) survey. Each qualifying family received 25 kilograms of food grains at a heavily discounted rate of Rs 2 per kg for wheat and Rs 3 per kg for rice. Starting in April 2002, this amount was increased from 25 to 35 kgs.
