Detailed Solution

GIFT (Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer): GIFT is an in vivo procedure. In GIFT, both sperm and eggs are collected and then transferred into the woman's fallopian tube, where fertilisation is expected to occur naturally within the body.

  • IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation): IVF is a process where fertilisation of an egg and sperm occurs outside the body in a laboratory dish, which is why it's termed "in vitro" (Latin for "in glass"). Once fertilisation occurs, the resulting embryo is then implanted into the woman's uterus.
  • ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection): ICSI is a specific technique which involves direct injection of a single sperm into an egg to assist with fertilisation. Like IVF, ICSI takes place in vitro, not inside the body.
  • ZIFT (Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer): ZIFT is also a technique related to IVF. In ZIFT, the fertilized embryo (zygote) is transferred into the fallopian tube instead of the uterus. Again, this procedure is done outside the body (in vitro) initially.
