GulamgiriPhule was written by Jyotiba Phule. She was a member of the Mali caste of farmers and gardeners, was born on April 11, 1827. Phule was motivated by Thomas Paine's book The Rights of Man and felt that enlightening women and people from lower castes was the best way to tackle social ills. The Phules founded three schools by 1852, but by 1858, all of them had closed owing to a lack of funding in the wake of the Revolt of 1857. After seeing the miserable conditions faced by widows, Jyotiba founded an ashram for young widows and finally came to support the concept of widow remarriage.
