Detailed Solution

Deuterium can undergo a nuclear fusion reaction.
The nuclear fusion process is the opposite of nuclear fission. The heavy nuclei of radioactive atoms like uranium, plutonium, or thorium split into smaller nuclei when bombarded with low-energy neutrons. But in the fusion process, two light element nuclei join to generate heavy nuclei. However, the energy produced in a nuclear fusion reaction is much more than in a nuclear fission reaction.
When slow-moving neutrons strike uranium-235 atoms, the heavy uranium nucleus splits into two medium-weight atoms, barium-139 and krypton-94 krypton-94, with the release of three neutrons. Deuterium atoms, or heavy hydrogen atoms with mass number 2, combine to form a heavy helium nucleus when heated to an extremely high temperature and under extremely high pressure.
