Adhering junctions perform cementing to keep neighbouring cells together. These are also termed as desmosomes, or anchoring junctions. These are found on the lateral cell surface and also on the basal domain of the epithelial cell.

Epithelium and muscle cells are provided with desmosomes which act as ‘rivets’ binding the cells together into strong sheets. Intermediate filaments made of the protein keratin, anchor (support) the desmosomes in the cytoplasm.
