Although the Britishers could suppress the revolt, they caused major damage. The British believed that the Muslims, not Hindus, were responsible for the rebellion. As a result, their land and property were confiscated and looked upon with suspicion. Moreover, in 1858, the British Parliament passed a new Legislation that sanctioned the transferring of the East India Company's responsibilities to the British Crown itself. This was to ensure more responsible management of Indian affairs. Further, landlords and zamindars were also protected by newly formulated policies that guaranteed their rights to their lands.
