Detailed Solution

In Linnaeus two kingdom system of classification, the presence or absence of a cell wall is the criteria. Accordingly, fungi were placed under the kingdom Plantae.

Whittaker withdrew Fungi from the plant kingdom and raised it to a kingdom level based on two major distinguishing features.
1. The nature of cell wall - Fungi, chitinous cell wall. Chitin is a complex polysaccharide, which is a modified sugar (N- acetyl glucosamine).
2. Mode of nutrition: Fungi is invariably heterotrophic.
