Tribal communities chanted Gandhi Ji's name and raised slogans demanding 'Swatantra Bharat' during the Non-Cooperation Movement. For the plantation workers in Assam, it was hard to move anywhere. Everyone had their understanding of the notion of swaraj'. To them, freedom meant being able to return to the village from which they had come freely. The plantation workers were under the Inland Emigration Act of 1859. They were not allowed to leave without permission, and permission was rarely given to them. So, when they heard of the non-cooperation movement, they left the plantation and started heading home. The slogans they raised demanded 'Swatantra Bharat' and chanted Gandhi's name because they thought and related the movement to the all-India agitation.
