Santhals are the largest tribal community in India right now. They are indigenous to Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha, three states in India. They engaged in shifting agriculture and hunting, and living in connection with nature up to the 19th century. The regions where the Santhals lived were governed by the Bengal Presidency, whose authority the British took over in 1757 following the Battle of Plassey. The assault on the Zamindari system that they introduced upset Santhal's existence. They were reduced to becoming enslaved, landless workers in their own homes. In addition, the Santhal lands were occupied and abused by the local landowners.
