Belgium and Sri Lanka both have regional and social divisions.
The two major ethnic groups in Belgium are the Dutch-speaking, who occupies the Flemish region and the French-speaking, who live in the Wallonia region. In the 1950s/60s, there was major rivalry between these groups since the French speakers in Brussels were more economically advanced, which made the Dutch speakers resent them. However, the tensions between the two were resolved later with an innovative power-sharing arrangement.
The major social groups in Sri Lanka are the Sri Lankan Tamils, concentrated in the north and east of Sri Lanka and the Sinhalese in central and southern Sri Lanka. The Sinhala community forms the majority of the population. They wanted Sinhala to be the only official language of the country, disregarding Tamil in the 1950s. These social differences created a rift between the two major social groups of Sri Lanka.
