Africa was badly affected by the disease named ‘Rinderpest’. The cattle pandemic that ravaged Africa in the 1880s was known as rinderpest. It spread across Sub-Saharan Africa for the first time and was able to infiltrate Africa because of the European colonial invasion. After originating in the Eritrean port, the virus travelled and reached East Africa by 1891. Rinderpest killed 90 percent of the livestock in the continent. Consequently, many natives lost their jobs because agriculture and livestock production were crucial aspects of the economy. In addition, this disease enabled the Europeans to conquer and strengthen their power in Africa.
