Detailed Solution

Lord Canning decided that Bahadur Shah Zafar would be the last emperor of the Mughal dynasty and would end with him. The East India Company consolidated its rule in the country by asserting its power and influence over the kings and other rulers of the country. Their economic sphere of influence became so large at one point that they asked Bahadur Shah Zafar, a descendant of the Mughal dynasty, to vacate the Red Fort. This was in 1849. 7 years later, Canning made it official. His sons would not be referred to as kings, and they would simply be princes. Hence, the British ended one of the most significant dynasties of the Indian subcontinent.
