Detailed Solution

Concept: The eradication of smallpox in India was one of the achievements of the government. It was the only infectious disease that had ever been completely eradicated. Edward Jenner is the inventor of the smallpox vaccine.

The mortality rate was very high due smallpox.  Smallpox was found to be one of the most serious infectious diseases caused by the variola virus. It was an infectious disease that could have spread easily from one person to another. People with smallpox developed a fever and a distinct, persistent rash appeared.
People with smallpox can recover a lot but it seems that about 3 out of 10 people with the disease have died. Many smallpox survivors have permanent scars that can be seen on large areas of their bodies, especially on their faces. The disease was so severe that some people became blind.
Only the eradication of this disease was possible due to the development of the vaccine and thus smallpox was eliminated. After 1977, no smallpox cases occurred.

Hence, the correct option is D.
