Detailed Solution

The disorder that represents a decrease in respiratory surface due to damaged alveolar walls is emphysema. Emphysema is a lung condition that falls under the category of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is characterised by the destruction of the alveolar walls in the lungs. Due to various factors, such as smoking, exposure to pollutants and genetic predisposition, the alveolar walls lose their elasticity and integrity. As a result, the alveoli become enlarged and lose their ability to effectively exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide with the blood. This damage leads to a decrease in the respiratory surface area, impairing the lungs ability to efficiently oxygenate the blood and remove carbon dioxide during breathing.
