Caste divisions are unique to India.
Every society has some degree of social inequality and labour division. The majority of organisations pass down jobs from one generation to the next. An extreme example of this is the caste system. It differs from other societies because this system sanctioned hereditary occupational division through rituals. People who belonged to the same caste group were expected to create a social group that engaged in similar occupations, got married to other people from their caste group, and avoided eating with people from different caste groups. The foundation of the caste system was the prejudice and exclusion of the "outcaste" communities. They were made to suffer under the terrible custom of untouchability.
