The caste division is one of the divisions unique to India. For centuries, people in India were divided into four categories according to their caste and had occupations attributed to them. There was no caste mobility as they upheld the caste hierarchy for centuries. The higher castes discriminated against, the lower castes and practised vicious acts of untouchability against them. Passing on the occupation from one generation to another is a part of all feudal societies. A caste system is an extreme form of this, as the hereditary occupational division was sanctioned by rituals.
