The broadly utilitarian argument says that biodiversity plays a major role in many ecosystem services that nature provides, for example, healthy forest ecosystems purify air and water, mitigate droughts and floods, cycle nutrients, generate fertile soils, provide wildlife habitat, maintain biodiversity, pollinate crops, provide storage site for carbon and also provide aesthetic, cultural and spiritual values. Amazon forest is estimated to produce 20 per cent of the total oxygen in the earth’s atmosphere. The aesthetic pleasure we derive while walking through woods, watching flowers, listening to birds' songs also come under broadly utilitarian argument.
