The national emblem of the Republic of India is called, is an adaptation of Ashoka's Lion Capital of 250 BC at Sarnath, UP. It has 4 lions facing 4 different directions namely north, east, south and west but only three are visible at a time. The lion is also a symbol of royalty and leadership, which may represent the Buddhist king Ashoka, who commissioned these pillars. A chakra (wheel) was originally placed above the lions.
