Detailed Solution

Indiscriminate cutting of trees by contractors was the reason for the disappearance of forests close to railroad tracks. The railway system began to expand quickly in the 1860s. By 1890, there were around 25,500 kilometres of track. The railway tracks spanned across India, increasing the number of fallen trees. Even in the Madras Presidency in the 1850s, 35,000 trees were cut down annually for sleepers. The government gave private companies contracts so they could get the required quantities. Instead, they started slashing trees irresponsibly, these contractors, which led to rapid forest disappearance along the train tracks.
