Radial and indeterminate cleavage occurs in deuterostomes (echinoderms, hemichordates and chordates). Cockroach is a protostome. In protostomes, cleavage is spiral and determinate. Radial cleavage is a pattern of cell division that results in the formation of cells arranged in a circular pattern around a central axis. Spiral cleavage is a pattern of cell division that results in the formation of cells arranged in a spiral pattern around a
central axis.
In animals exhibiting determinate cleavage, the fate of each blastomere is predetermined at the time of its division. This means that the cells produced by determinate cleavage will develop into specifi c types of cells and tissues. The blastomeres produced by indeterminate cleavage have the potential to develop into
a variety of different cell types and tissues, and their fi nal fate is not determined until later in development.
(1) The exoskeleton of Periplaneta americana and other arthropods is made up of chitin. Chitin is a polysaccharide made up of N-acetylglucosamine units (monomers).
(2) The body of Periplaneta shows metameric segmentation. The thorax has three segments. The abdomen has 10 segments in the adult stage.
(3) The coelom of cockroach is schizocoelom (formed by the splitting of mesoderm). However, it is very much
reduced and confi ned to reproductive organs. The functional body cavity is haemocoel, filled with haemolymph.
