When a metal is treated with an acid, hydrogen gas is evolved.
The evolution of hydrogen gas takes place when an acid reacts with metal. For example, when metal is treated with dilute sulphuric acid, the products are metal salt and hydrogen gas; Hydrogen gas produced can be tested practically by putting a lighted match stick near the head of the test in which the reaction is taking place, and we will hear a pop sound which confirms the presence of hydrogen gas. The reaction between a metal and acid is an example of a displacement reaction. The more reactive metal displaces less reactive hydrogen.
The reaction is as follows :
2M+H2SO4M2SO4+H2
