Exhalation causes the release of carbon dioxide.

Exhalation is the act of exhaling air from the lungs.

We take in oxygen when we inhale, which is required for cellular respiration. Cells in our bodies use oxygen to break down glucose and other fuels to produce energy during cellular respiration (ATP).

This process generates carbon dioxide as a waste product, which must be eliminated from the body.

As a result, when we exhale, we expel carbon dioxide as well as other gases such as nitrogen. The carbon dioxide concentration in expired air is higher than in inhaled air.
