Oxytocin and vasopressin are synthesised by the cell bodies of the neurosecretory cells of the hypothalamus. 

These are then transported along the hypothalamic–hypophyseal tract (axons) to the axon terminals in the posterior pituitary, where they are stored, and are released into blood, when needed.
