Rice is a staple food of a vast majority of Indians.
It is a type of Kharif crop which requires high humidity. Other conditions, such as a high temperature (25 degrees Celsius) and high rainfall above 100 centimetres, are favourable for growing rice. It is mainly grown in the plains of North and North-eastern India, coastal areas, and the deltaic regions. In the states that receive low rainfall, such as Punjab, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Rajasthan, rice is grown with a well-developed canal irrigation network and tube wells.
