Sinhala speakers form the majority social group in Sri Lanka. They constitute about 74 per cent of the population of Sri Lanka. With this majority in their number, they dominated the new democratic government of Sri Lanka once the country gained independence. The Sinhala-dominated government then imposed a series of majoritarian measures, further establishing Sinhala hegemony. This eventually led to the frustration of the minority communities in the country, such as the Sri Lankan Tamils, and finally led to a civil war in the country.
