Corpus luteum is a temporary endocrine gland in the human body.

After ovulation, the ruptured Graafian follicle transforms into the corpus luteum, which produces hormones, such as progesterone. Progesterone is essential for maintaining the endometrial lining and preparing the uterus for pregnancy. If the oocyte is not fertilised, the corpus luteum will degenerate into a scar called corpus albicans. If the oocyte is fertilised and a pregnancy ensues, the corpus luteum will continue to produce hormones until the placenta takes over and begins to produce hormones of its own. Because the corpus luteum only exists for a limited time in each menstrual cycle, and its hormone production is limited to that period, it is considered a temporary endocrine gland.
