The features of the early print culture of Japan are- introduced by Buddhist missionaries, the oldest Japanese book was printed in the 9th century AD, and books were cheap and abundant. A.D. 768–770 saw the introduction of hand printing into Japan by Chinese Buddhist missionaries. The Buddhist Diamond Sutra, which is the earliest book ever printed in Japan and has six pages of text and woodcut pictures, was published in A.D. 868. Playing cards, paper currency, and textile items all had images printed on them. The works of poets and prose authors were regularly published in mediaeval Japan, and there were cheap and plentiful books available.
