Detailed Solution

Kolkata is an inland riverine port.
The oldest operating port in India is used to transport industrial cargo like coal, iron ore, fertilisers, petroleum products, and other products like automobiles. The only riverine port of India, the Kolkata Port, was inaugurated in 1870, owned and operated by Syama Prasad Mukherjee Port Authority and co-owned by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Government of India. The port was used by the British for the exchange of raw materials to Britain and other countries around the world to gain profit. Leather, cotton textiles, and iron ore are the chief exports, while wheat, iron and steel, machinery, and raw cotton are the major imports.
