Fresh cocoons have living pupae inside of them, so they can't be preserved for a long time since the pupae might mature and turn into moths in 10–12 days, which splits the cocoons at one end and cause them to become punctured cocoons. Cocoons with holes are worthless. Thus, the pupae are eliminated without causing harm to the cocoon.

Silk worm farming for the production of silk is known as sericulture. Silkworms form a cocoon around themselves using their saliva which contains fibrous protein. inside the cocoon, the larvae of silkworm propagate to the pupae stage.
