Iris is the visible coloured portion of the eye. The aperture surrounded by the iris is called the pupil.

The iris is composed of heavily pigmented epithelium; the dilator and sphincter muscles; a stroma of highly vascularised connective tissue containing melanocytes.

It is an extension of ciliary body which is a part of choroid layer (not sclera).

The space between the cornea and the lens (iris is within this space) is called the aqueous chamber and contains a thin watery fluid called aqueous humor (not vitreous).
