Lightning is an electric discharge. It is a natural phenomenon.
During the development of thunderstorms, the air currents move upwards and the water droplets move downwards. Due to the movement of air currents, a separation of charges takes place. The upper edges of clouds get positive charges and lower edges of clouds get negative charges and the ground also gets positive charges. The air cannot resist the flow of charges when the magnitude of the charges is large. When these positive and negative charges meet they produce a bright light and sound and this bright light is called lightning.
