Detailed Solution

A food chain is defined as the linear sequence of organisms where the latter eats the former. There are two types of food chains, the Grazing Food Chain (GFC) and the Detritus Food Chain (DFC).

  • GFC starts with green plants (as producers) and ends at secondary or tertiary carnivores, whereas DFC begins with dead organic matter, and is made up by decomposers.
  • GFC and DFC are interlinked at some level in the terrestrial ecosystem in which a much larger fraction of energy flows through the DFC than through the GFC. This is because GFC acts as the source of energy to the organisms of DFC, but some of the organisms of DFC are prey to GFC animals as well.
  • This natural interconnection of food chains make it a food web.
