Detailed Solution

As a consequence of the majoritarian policies adopted by Sri Lanka, the government was not sensitive to Tamil culture, the Tamils were discriminated against in jobs and education, and the government practised religious discrimination.
An Act was passed in 1956 that designated Sinhala as the sole official language, ignoring Tamil. The governments adopted preferential hiring practices that favoured Sinhala candidates for posts in government jobs. A new Constitution established that Buddhism must be protected and promoted by the state. The Tamils believed that none of the major political parties was considerate of their language and culture. The Tamils thus started political parties and campaigns.
