Corticosteroids are the steroid hormones secreted by the adrenal cortex. They are of three types – glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids and sex corticoids.

Glucocorticoids are involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Mineralocorticoids regulate the balance of water and electrolytes in our body. Sex corticoids (androgenic steroids) play a role in the growth of axial hair, pubic hair and facial hair during puberty.

Increased alertness, pupilary dilation, piloerection (raising of hairs), sweating, etc. are caused by adrenal medullary hormones (epinephrine and norepinephrine)
