Kharif is not a local name of the shifting cultivation. Shifting cultivation or Jhum is a common traditional agricultural practice in Asia, South America, and Africa. It refers to the practice of cutting down forests and burning them in rotation. The ashes produced are sown with the seeds after the first monsoon. The crops, thus produced, are harvested by October-November. In this practice, the land is cultivated for a few years and then left fallow for 17-18 years. The practice of shifting cultivation is known by many names such as Penda, Nevada, Bewar, Podu, Kumri, etc.
