The Samajwadi Party is not a national party but a regional party. However, it has a national-level political organisation. It is active in two to three states but is not recognised as a national party by the Election Commission of India. This is because a party to be recognised as a national party has to either win 2% of the seats in the Lok Sabha from at least three different states or it should get at least 6% of the total votes polled in four different states in the Lok Sabha elections. Also, it has to win four Lok Sabha seats from any state or states. The Samajwadi Party is a regional party in India formed in UP state in 1992 by Socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia. Its basic ideology is also socialism, aiming to create a socialist society that works on equality and its principles.
