The knee jerk reflex arc is a spinal reflex pathway that does not involves the brain. The knee jerk reflex is a simple reflex that occurs when the patellar tendon is tapped with a reflex hammer. This causes a reflex action in which the quadriceps muscle contracts and the lower leg extends, resulting in the ‘knee jerk’ movement. The sensory neuron receives the sensory input from the patellar tendon and sends this information to the spinal cord. The motor neuron then sends a signal from the spinal cord to the quadriceps muscle, causing it to contract and produce the knee jerk movement. The brain is not involved in this reflex arc.
