Desert plants (xerophytes) have thick cuticles to cut down transpiration. Mesophytes have thin cuticle. Hydrophytes lack cuticle.

The stomata of desert plants are arranged in deep pits (sunken) to minimise water loss through transpiration. In addition, in CAM plants stomata are open at night and they absorb carbon dioxide at night to reduce water loss during the daytime. This is an adaption in desert plants to conserve water.

Many desert plants have spines (sharp needle-like structures), which are modified leaves. This reduce the surface area and in turn, reduce the evaporation of water through stomata.
