French society of the 18th century was divided into three Estates. The members of the first two Estates enjoyed some privileges by birth. Peasants were part of the Third Estate. People of all the Estates did not pay taxes. There were three estates in eighteenth-century French society, and only those in the third estate were required to pay taxes. The first two Estates of the nobility and clergy did not pay any taxes. They had several feudal privileges. About 90% of the population was made up of peasants, which formed the Third Estate. All members of the Third Estate were required to pay taxes to the state after the Church collected its portion of taxes, known as tithes, from the peasants. These included a direct tax known as the taille as well as several indirect taxes imposed on common household goods like salt and tobacco.
