The biogeochemical cycle refers to the cyclic movement of the elements from the abiotic system to the biotic system and back again. These chemicals form the compounds of food, and so, these cycles are also known as nutrient cycles. The biogeochemical cycle always has a state of equilibrium that occurs when there is a balance in the cycling of the elements between compartments.

Different biogeochemical cycles such as the carbon cycle, nitrogen cycle, sulfur cycle, and phosphorus cycle interact with one another. The cycles on Earth connect the energy and molecules on the planet into continuous loops that support life. 

The basic building blocks of life such as water, oxygen, carbon, sulfur, phosphorus, and nitrogen are recycled and go back into their respective cycles repeatedly.

The biogeochemical cycles also create reservoirs of these building blocks such as the water stored in lakes and oceans, and the sulfur stored in rocks and minerals.
