Detailed Solution

  • Milk and water cannot be separated by simple distillation because milk is a complex mixture of various components, including water, proteins, sugars, fats, and minerals, that do not have significantly different boiling points.
  • In simple distillation, a mixture is heated to the point where the component with the lowest boiling point vaporizes first, and the vapor is collected and condensed into a separate container.
  • However, in the case of milk and water, both components have boiling points that are very close to each other, with water boiling at 100°C and milk proteins and fats starting to decompose at temperatures above 70°C.
  • Therefore, when milk is heated, it does not simply vaporize into a separate container as water would in simple distillation. Instead, the proteins and fats in the milk will denature and coagulate, forming clumps and solid particles that will not be separated from the water through simple distillation.
  • To separate milk and water, other separation techniques such as centrifugation or filtration may be needed.
