Detailed Solution

The ovarian cycle has three phases: the follicular phase, ovulation, and luteal phase.

The follicular phase begins on the first day of menstruation and lasts until ovulation, during which an ovarian follicle matures and prepares to release an egg.

Ovulation occurs when the matured follicle ruptures, releasing the egg into the fallopian tube.

The luteal phase then begins, during which the ruptured follicle forms the corpus luteum and produces hormones to prepare the uterus for a potential pregnancy.

If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum breaks down, and the menstrual cycle starts again with the onset of menstruation.
