Saturation occurs when all the available transport proteins are occupied by molecules or ions, and they are working at their maximum capacity. At this point, increasing the concentration of the molecules or ions on one side of the membrane will not result in a corresponding increase in the rate of transport because the transport proteins are already fully engaged.
