Menocchio was not hauled by the church and rewarded. Menocchio was a Millman from Montereale Valcellina, Italy, who was tried for heresy by a Roman inquiry for his unorthodox religious views. The 16th-century spiritual life and medieval value of the Menoccio are known from the inquisition records. He was first tried for heresy in 1583 and was released in 1586, as he claimed to have improved. However, he continued under house arrest and had to wear a burning cross on his clothes as a visible sign of his crimes. In 1598, after continuing to promote his beliefs, he was again arrested. Finally, in 1599, he was declared heresy and hanged by burning.
