Atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) is a hormone produced by cells in the atria of the heart which is not a specialised gland of the endocrine system but an organ of cardiovascular system specialised to pump blood.  ANF is a peptide hormone released in response to high blood volume and pressure in the circulatory system. It causes vasodilation to reduce the blood pressure. ANF acts on the kidneys to increase the excretion of Na+ and water, to lower blood pressure and reduce the volume of blood in the circulatory system.  PTH, TSH and TCT are secreted by specialised endocrine glands (PTH – parathyroid gland; TSH – anterior pituitary gland; TCT – thyroid gland).
