The byproducts of the destructive distillation of wood are Tar, Terpenes, and Charcoal.
The process of igniting wood by rapidly raising the temperature is known as destructive distillation. The byproducts of this process have numerous applications. Gases (carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and methane), liquids, and solid residue-charcoal are the end products of this process. The liquid and gaseous products separate into steam and gases, which are then cooled to produce a distillate. The distillate then separates into wood tar and pyro-ligneous acid. Acetic acid, methanol, and other products can be produced from the acid through processing. Inhibitors (the fraction rich in phenols) are produced by fractional distillation of wood tar. They are used to stabilise the oils and benzines produced during the cracking process and the flotation oil used in the dressing of ores. Carbon disulfide, activated charcoal, and other substances are all made with charcoal.
